Ph. D. Student Positions (m/f)
in the areas of
“X-ray crystallography/structural biology, biochemistry, cell biology, protein engineering, recombinant antibodies, mass spectrometry, or biophysics

Our Department studies intracellular transport, the assembly of nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) and of entire cell nuclei, the permeability barrier of NPCs (a "smart" material formed by a phase separation process from intrinsically disordered FG domains), the mechanism of NPC-passage, and cargo-recognition by shuttling nuclear transport receptors. We employ a wide range of techniques such as in vitro nuclear assembly and nuclear transport assays, light and electron microscopy, x-ray crystallography, phage display, genetics, isolation of protein complexes, as well as mass spectrometry. We also pursue method development in particular in the areas of nanobodies, protein engineering, and advanced affinity chromatography.

The successful applicants will join projects/develop their own projects in these or related areas. Ph. D. candidates should be team-oriented and hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biochemistry, biophysics, biology, or a related natural science. The Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry provides an outstanding environment for cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research at the interface between biology, physics and chemistry. The working language is English.

We offer a 3-year contract with the possibility of an extension. The payment and benefits are based on the TVöD guidelines.
