The Max Planck Research School for Physics of Biological and Complex Systems is a cooperation between the Max Planck Institutes for Biophysical Chemistry and for Dynamics and Self-Organization and the University of Göttingen. It offers an interdisciplinary training focussing on biophysics. State-of-the-art physical methods as well as latest techniques in biology, chemistry and computer sciences are combined to investigate biological and other complex systems quantitatively. The doctoral program thereby integrates physics of complex systems with physics of biological systems in a unique way. The International Max Planck Research School is directly integrated within the Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB), which is funded by the German Excellence Initiative and currently comprises 12 different doctoral programs.
Students holding a diploma- or master’s Degree obtain an intensive theoretical and practical training, enabling them to complete their Ph.D. within three years. The training comprises biochemistry, structural biology, bioinformatics and biophysics, as well as quantum chemistry. For the practical part of their work, the students join one of the participating research groups. Additionally, they are familiarized with state-of-the-art methods in practicals and lab-rotations. A doctoral committee consisting of three members supervises and advises the students throughout their thesis. Scientific training is complemented by seminars and soft skills training, e.g., communication- and presentation techniques or project- and team management. Students are encouraged to participate and to organize international conferences and workshops. The program language is English.
