In cooperation with the Georg August University Göttingen, the German Primate Center, the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and the Max-Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine, the International Max Planck Research School for Molecular Biology offers a research-oriented program in Molecular Biology in affiliation with the existing international program in this field offered by the university. Entering with a Bachelor’s degree, the students receive in the first year a broad theoretical and practical training that is both intensive and interdisciplinary. Training includes lectures, seminars, practical courses, and lab rotations. The spectrum of fields covered in this year ranges from biochemistry and structural biology, physiology, microbiology, genetics, cell biology, molecular pharmacology, neurobiology and biophysics. Upon successful completion of a qualifying exam by the end of the first year, the students join one of the participating research groups to begin their doctoral thesis, which is to be submitted within three years. A doctoral committee consisting of three members supervises and advises the students in their work. In addition, courses on current methods in molecular biology are offered on a regular basis. The laboratory work is accompanied by seminars, including training in soft skills, elective courses and participation in international conferences and workshops.
