Karl Friedrich Bonhoeffer Institute
The institute's full name is "Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry / Karl Friedrich Bonhoeffer Institute". But who was Karl Friedrich Bonhoeffer? Some of the institute's former Directors have met him personally, some of them even worked with him: He was a physico-chemist and the first Director of the former Max Planck Institute for Physical Chemistry in Göttingen, which was founded by the Max Planck Society in 1949. In 1971, this institute and the later Göttingen Max Planck Institute for Spectroscopy were merged to form the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry. The focus of the newly founded institute on biological research also has its roots in the work and interest of Karl Friedrich Bonhoeffer. He pursued a very strong interdisziplinary approach at a very early stage and applied physical-chemical methods to resolve biological questions - a good reason to name the institute aofter him.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Karl Friedrich Bonhoefer's death on May 15, and in the memory of the name giver of the present institute, we have prepared a website about his life, his scientific discoveries, and also the particular harm, injury and sorrow from which the Bonhoeffer family had suffered under the Nazi regime. The presentation is based on an article by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schindewolf from Karlsruhe University, which was published in "Bunsen-Magazin" 2002 (Bunsen-Magazin 4(6), 139-146, 2002). We are very grateful to Prof. Schindewolf and the Editor of the Bunsen-Magazin for their permission to do so.
The Website is available in German only.
