Two cells from the adrenal medulla, specialized on the release of the stress hormone adrenaline. One of these is contacted by two types of electrodes: A microcarbon fiber (left) measures the adrenaline upon release into its surroundings. Simultaneously, a "patch pipette" (right) establishes a connection of the cell interior and measures the cell surface area, which increases upon fusion of vesicles with the outer membrane.
