The doctoral program "Physics and Advanced Microscopy of Biological Systems" is a member of the Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB). It is hosted by the DFG Research Center Molecular Physiology of the Brain (CMPB) and is conducted jointly by the University of Göttingen, the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, and the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization.

The research-oriented program is taught in English and open to students who hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in the physics, biophysics, life sciences, medicine, or related fields. As part of a bi-annual international coordinated recruitment, applications are welcome until January 15th and June 15th. Alternatively, applications can be addressed independent of deadlines directly to individual faculty members of the program. Building upon links between physics and life sciences, the program aims at advancing the quantitative understanding of life processes while exploring new frontiers of physics. The school is embedded in the DFG Excellence Cluster Advanced Microscopy focusing on research on the dynamics of motor proteins, structure and pattern formation in ensembles of interacting cells, modeling of hydrodynamics and pattern formation of complex fluids, or modeling of neuronal information processing.

The program offers cutting-edge advanced microscopy courses essential for studying life processes in combination with quantitative physical approaches. An important aim is to overcome traditional barriers between disciplines and expose graduate students to physics and biology for a deeper understanding of both areas preparing students for increasingly interdisciplinary life sciences.
