Privacy Policy

General

We are collecting data about your use of FLORA with the goal of improving the site's structure and our library collection. Our service providers collect data to protect their infrastructure.

We don't want to "get to know you better" and we're not profit oriented. We do not supply data to 3rd parties aside from the service providers named on this page (unless required by law or court order). All data is handled in Germany, under the comparatively strict local law, regardless of your location.

Logfiles

FLORA is being run for us by the Verbundzentrale des gemeinsamen Bibliotheksverbundes. The VZG's web servers collect personally identifiable information in their log files when you access FLORA.

The following information is being temporarily stored:

  • Your IP-address
  • Date and time of access to the site
  • URLs accessed (within core.coll.mpg.de)
  • Previously visited URL (referrer), if supplied by your browser
  • User agent description, if supplied by your browser (includes OS and browser version)

Cookies

FLORA's log-in functionality is based on session cookies.

Most browsers are configured to automatically accept 1st party cookies. However, you can configure your browser to not accept these, and may then be unable to log in to FLORA.

Matomo (analytics.mpdl.mpg.de)

We have contracted the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) to generate insights into the behaviour of FLORA users for us. The MPDL is using the web analytics platform Matomo to that end, which utilizes cookies and JavaScript to collect several types of information, which are  then transferred and stored on a server run by the MPDL. You can use FLORA without being tracked in this way (see below).

The following types of data are being collected by the MPDL's Matomo server (unless you have opted out):

Without JavaScript:

  • IP-address, anonymized by truncating
  • Session cookie, to differentiate users
  • Previously visited URL (referrer), if supplied by your browser
  • User agent description, if supplied by your browser (includes OS and browser version)

Additionally, if you allow JavaScript from analytics.mpdl.mpg.de to run:

  • URLs visited within FLORA and links followed away from FLORA
  • Timestamps for all page views
  • Type of HTML request (GET, PUT, etc.)
  • Screen resolution and color depth
  • Browser capabilities (i.e.: Cookies, Java, Flash, PDF, WindowsMedia, QuickTime, Realplayer, Director, SilverLight, Google Gears. This may considerably weaken the anonymity provided by IP truncation)

Storage and analysis of your data is done solely on one server run by the MPDL in Germany.

Legal basis for collection of your personally identifiable information is § 6.1 f) GDPR. We assert a legitimate interest in collecting and using this data to improve the service we offer with FLORA.

Opting out:

You have the following two (mutually independent) avenues for opting out:

Storage and analysis are strictly performed in anonymized form (truncated IP addresses). Session cookies are deleted when your browser is closed. User specific profiles are not created.

3rd parties:

The following service providers are involved in providing FLORA and neccesarily come into contact with data generated by your visit in the process:

VZG

The Verbundzentrale des Gemeinsamen Bibliotheksverbundes (VZG) is our web hoster, they are running/maintaining the web server offering FLORA. The VZG also provides the K10plus-Zentral SOLR-index, which you are querying via FLORA. In the sense of GDPR § 6.1 f), they have an legitimate interest to handle and analyze visitor data to secure their infrastructure and maintain the level of service covenanted to us.
