Ph.D. position (f/m)

Job Offer from August 30, 2018

The Department “Dynamics at Surfaces” (Prof. Alec M. Wodtke) at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry invites applications for a

Ph.D. position (f/m)
(Code Number 25-18)

starting in October 2018. The research aims at unraveling photo-induced reactive and non-reactive chemical processes using femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. In these experiments chemical transformations are triggered by a short laser pulse and the induced dynamics is monitored by measuring transient absorption spectra in the UV-Vis with a time-delayed femtosecond white light continuum or probe pulses in the mid-infrared, respectively.

The successful candidate will be involved in a recently funded research project to elucidate the sequence of events taking place during photo-induced proton coupled electron transfer (PCET). The transfer of multiple electrons and protons plays an important role in many biological systems and is required for the generation of solar fuels, e.g. during water oxidation, reduction of CO2 or conversion of CO to methanol. For the proposed studies novel specially designed transition metal complexes are used which serve as model compounds to gain thorough physical understanding of excited state PCET with a time resolution down to 100 fs using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy.

The candidate should hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in chemistry, physical chemistry, physics or a related subject. Experiences in working with short-pulse lasers, optics as well as programming skills are advantageous.

The payment and benefits are based on the TVöD guidelines. The Ph.D. position is limited to three years with the possibility of extension.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

Please send your application including a cover letter (explaining background and motivation), CV, transcript of records, contact names and addresses of two to four referees familiar with the work of the candidate preferably via e-mail as one single PDF file with reference to the code number until September 28, 2018 to
