Grant of the VW Foundation (Euro 1.7 Mio) for the establishment of a joint project between the MPI für biophysikalische Chemie and the Bereich Humanmedizin of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen dedicated to clinical “MR Research in Neurology and Psychiatry”. Funding of a whole-body 3 T MRI system was provided by the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, while the Bereich Humanmedizin financed a new building in direct vicinity to the University hospital.

Foundation of the “Biomedizinische NMR Forschungs GmbH (gemeinnützig) am MPI für biophysikalische Chemie” in Göttingen. Financing of the research organization was ensured by royalties from the group's patents via the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft. The accumulated income amounts to about Euro 160 Mio.
