PhD Student Positions (f/m)
- Physical Chemistry Approaches to Nanoscopy with Molecular Resolution -
(Code Number 36-18)

New concepts have brought about a paradigm shift in the physical limits to optical analysis of molecular systems. Imaging resolutions of a few nano­meters have been demonstrated, well beyond Abbe’s diffraction limit. The recently demonstrated MINFLUX concept (Science 355, 606-612 (2017)) outlines a path to further improved minimally invasive, low-light-level analysis down to the molecular scale. This will open up entirely new experimental opportunities in the study of macromolecules and beyond.

During their thesis work, the successful candidates will develop expertise in in-depth photophysical characterization of molecular fluorescent emitters, and harness it to optimize imaging conditions and resolution performance of cutting-edge nanoscopy approaches developed in the department.

Candidates should be highly motivated and prepared to work within a truly multidisciplinary team. They should have (or expect to complete soon) a Master’s or equivalent degree in Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics or a comparable qualification.

Candidates have the opportunity to participate in one of several PhD programs in Göttingen or Heidelberg. Opportunities may also arise from becoming part of the newly established Max Planck School Matter to Life (see www.maxplanckschools.de/en/matter-to-life and www.maxplanckschools.de/en/mission) with a competitive admission process.

The payment and benefits are based on the TVöD guidelines. The PhD positions are limited to three years with a possibility of extension.
