IT Organization at the Institute
In case of IT-related problems you can get support from three different sources:
- Departmental IT
- There is an IT person in most of the departments and groups, who is your primary contact person.
- IT & Electronic Service
- The IT & Elektronic Service (ITES) is responsible for IT tasks regarding the entire institute, like user management, file, print and licence server, network and IT helpdesk. The IT service supports the departmental IT person, to an extent which differs between different groups. For most groups ITES is responsible for all IT related tasks including computer installations and software distribution.
Besides computer-related issues the service includes the repair, modification and construction of electronic devices. It is the central electronic workshop of the institute.
- The Gesellschaft für Wisschenschaftliche Datenverarabeitung Göttingen (GWDG) is the computer center of the University of Göttingen and the Max-Planck-Society. It is located on our campus.
Some IT Services are provided by the GWDG. For ordinary users the important ones are the Mail-Server, the GWDG Cloud share and the WiFi eduroam. If you have very specific IT-related questions the staff of the GWDG can provide competent support. But usually you get in touch with a person in the IT & Electronic Service first.
As a new staff member or guest at the institute, you want to start using the computers of your group. But nobody can use the IT infrastructure and gets an account, who has not agreed to the usage regulations for the IT infrastructure.
Every user account in the institute is also an account with the GWDG. Each user account is set up in two systems, the LDAP of the GWDG and the institute domain MPG-BPC in the Active Directory. To keep the passwords synchronized, you change them by using the self service of the GWDG.
When logging into services at either the institute or the GWDG, use either accountname or email@example.com.
